Event History - The 1916 Walkless Talkless Parade

In 1916, over 3000 suffragists converged on Saint Louis, MO in the sweltering heat during the Democratic National convention poised to re-nominate Woodrow Wilson as President. Their sole demand was a plank in the party platform in support of women's suffrage. Wearing white dresses and golden sashes that said "Votes For Women', they lined the street where the delegates would walk from their hotel to the convention center. The impact of these women, who formed a 'walkless talkless parade', sometimes called "The Golden Lane" was enormous. They accomplished their objective and got the plank on the platform.

Make a donation in honor of a woman important to you

The LWV's Celebrate the Vote event is September 3. We will be remembering a time 100 years ago. In 1916 in St. Louis, silent women dressed in white wore golden sashes emblazoned with the words "Votes For Women" and formed a "Golden Lane" that delegates to the DNC walked through on their way to the meetings. This "walkless talkless parade" was to get women's suffrage adopted to the party platform.

This year on September 3, 2016, the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis will honor the suffragists who worked so hard to get us the right to vote. Our foremothers enabled today's reality where women not only vote, but use their voices at all levels of government, business, and society. In 1916, this could have been your grandmother or great-grandmother or great-great-grandmother who endured the ridicule of that time. Because of the women who stood in silence in 1916, it was acceptable for my grandma to be a "Rosie the Riveter", my mom to serve on a jury and choose to have me, and for me to play a sport for my college and study engineering. And today my daughters pursue their dreams with the knowledge that women have achieved positions of authority and power in all walks of life.

Join me in honoring our foremothers with a donation to Celebrate the Vote that honors a woman important to you. I am honoring my mom and grandma. The person that you honor will have their name displayed at Celebrate the Vote.
