ST. LOUIS CITY SATURDAY DAY UNIT. On Saturday, April 10 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the Center for Women in Transition will present "Bridging Home" a program about the organization's mission and programs featuring one of the mentees, a board member and the Center's Executive Director. The Center for Women in Transition provides tools, supports and resources to help women who have recently been released from jail/prison. Through participation in this program these women are able to make positive choices, achieve meaningful goals and be accountable for past actions. The organization provides its clients with a wide array of referrals and services that help women achieve stable housing and employment, reunification with family and freedom from addiction. One key to the program's success is a one-on-one mentoring program in which each client is matched with a volunteer mentor who offers guidance and hope for a brighter future during a one-year partnership. As a direct result of these services, clients exhibit a substantially lower rate of recidivism than state averages, resulting in improved self-image for the women, stability for their children and families, and safer communities. There will be time for discussion and questions.

Currently, Wind Capital Group is developing a 150 MW wind project in Northwest Missouri. At $340,000,000, it is the single largest private investment in this technology in Missouri this year. 90th Anniversary Celebration of the Women' s Right to Vote and the Founding of the League of Women Voters. On April 24th, from 11am until 3 pm, the League of Women Voters of Missouri will hold a celebration luncheon for all League members and guests. The luncheon will be at the Golf Club House, 6131 Lagoon Drive in Forest Park. This anniversary celebration will include honoring one Outstanding League Member by each Missouri League. In addition, the Rachel Farr Fitch Health Care Award will be given to an individual or group that has done outstanding work in the field of health care. While the service or activity does not have to be a League project, it must be compatible with LWV ideals and not in conflict with our program positions. Anticipated for many months, the drawing for the Historic Quilt raffle will reward one lucky ticket holder with the Historic Quilt representing famous women in the suffrage movement and the continued fight for women's rights. The quilt to be awarded on April 24th includes St. Louis suffragist Phoebe Wilson Couzins. A similar quilt will be awarded at the LWVUS Convention in Atlanta in June includes Mrs. Frank Leslie. The quilt blocks were made by League members and friends of the League across the state of Missouri. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased at the League office or at the luncheon. The main presentation, "Women: Then, Now and Tomorrow," will include three accomplished Missouri women: Ms. Jo Mannies of the St. Louis Beacon; Ms. Vivian Eveloff, from the Sue Shear Institute at UMSL; and Dr. Catherine Rymph, Associate Professor in the History Department at the UM at Columbia. Reservations, luncheon selections, and payment need to be at the League office by April 15. Tickets will be held at the registration desk. Further information made be found at lwvmissouri.org

Cape Albeon Health Care Committee and International Relations Committee. Two of the League's committees, Health Care and International Relations, are working together to bring members a presentation on obstetric fistula. We encourage all members to join us on Saturday morning, October 9, at 10 a.m. to hear Dr. Lewis Wall, a renowned authority on the subject. Dr. Wall, an ob-gyn at Washington University, is building a hospital in Danja, Niger. In addition to repairing fistulas, the hospital will also organize outreach efforts to promote maternal health and reduce deaths in childbirth. Fistula has been labeled the forgotten international women's health and human rights problem. To quote Nicholas Kristof in an op-ed in the NY Times: "This is a childbirth injury, often suffered by a teenager in Africa or Asia whose pelvis is not fully grown. She suffers obstructed labor, has no access to a C-section, and endures internal injuries that leave her incontinent.... She stinks. She becomes a pariah." The meeting will be held on the third floor of Cape Albeon, located at 3390 Lake Bend Drive, Valley Park, at 10 a.m. on October 9th. (Take Big Bend west to Dougherty Ferry, turn left, or take 270 to the Dougherty Ferry exit, follow Dougherty Ferry west past Big Bend and then left on Lake Bend.)
